Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum received your email regarding your
concerns with Kia Stevens . Attorney General McCollum asked that we
respond.
In Florida, the local police or sheriff's office and elected state
attorney investigate and prosecute criminal violations at the local level.
If you wish to file a criminal complaint, please contact the local law
enforcement agency and state attorney's office where you live or where the
alleged violation occurred. Those authorities operate independently and
are not a part of the Attorney General's Office. The contact information
for the state attorneys' offices is:
State Attorney's Office
Ninth Judicial Circuit
Post Office Box 1673
Orlando, Florida 32802
Telephone: (407) 836-2400
Website: http://www.myfpaa.org/?form=stateattorneys_9.html
Local law enforcement agencies may be found at:
Orange County Sheriff's Office
Post Office Box 1440
Orlando, Florida 32802-1440
Telephone: (407) 836-4357

The Attorney General's Office has no jurisdiction over the decision of the
State Attorney's Office to decline prosecution of a criminal case. In
Florida the elected state attorney in each of the twenty judicial circuits
is responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime at the local level.
The state attorneys operate independently and are not a part of the
Attorney General's Office. Their prosecuting decisions are not subject to
the authority of the Attorney General's Office.
Please contact an attorney if you need legal advice. An attorney can give
you the legal advice which our office is not at liberty to give to private
individuals. The Florida Bar offers a Lawyer Referral Service which you
may contact toll-free at (800) 342-8060. If you cannot afford an
attorney, you may be eligible for low cost or pro bono assistance through
a local legal aid office. The Florida Bar can assist you with this
process.
Thank you for contacting Attorney General McCollum's Office. I hope you
are able to find assistance in this matter.
